What is #SecondhandSeptember? Why should I participate?

The Secondhand September movement, started in 2019, encourages persons to commit to only buying second hand clothes for 30 days. It was created to inspire people to be kinder to the planet and to educate them about major fashion companies and their wasteful production habits. By joining #SecondhandSeptember you are:

1. Shopping your unique style- Thrift shops are one of the only establishments that provide you with fashion options from varying fashion timelines. Whether your style is vintage, y2k or timeless, thrifting is your one stop shop.
2. Save & make money- Items are severely discounted because of their use prior. You can also make money selling items online or to other thrift stores
3. Saving ocean and marine life by keeping plastics out of the way of animals like our beloved sea turtles who have poor eyesight, and often mistake plastic for food.

How could I participate in #SecondhandSeptember?

This challenge can be applied to more than just clothes and shopping. This month I challenge you to choose secondhand/sustainability wherever possible. Here are some of he ways you could do so:

1. Be intentional about your shopping habits: before purchasing a new item ask yourself if you could get the item you're looking for thrifted:
2. Donate or sell your items, either via in person thrift stores, flea markets or online stores and platforms like our app, "Casuarina":
3. Host a clothing swap with close friends or family:
4. Upcycle, revamp or alter your pre-existing items to suit your personal style.

How could I have a successful thrifting experience this #SecondhandSeptember?

1. Make a list- Yes, we want to buy more because thrifting is typically cheaper than buying new, however we still want to be intentional about what we purchase, only buying things we KNOW we will use.
2. Inspect the items- this tip is for both buyers and sellers because it avoids disappointment on both sides. Make sure that all items are free of any damage that will hinder you from using the item as you'd like. Sellers, please disclose any faults discovered with your items before listing them for sale.
3. Confirm, confirm, confirm- If shopping online, read the item description carefully checking for things like size, style and faults. If in person, try the items on or use sizing hacks.
